Although born in the state of Kansas, Karrin grew up in Omaha and in the area of the Bay Area Francisco, he learned to play classical piano and perfecting his technique as a vocal interpreter of folk and rock music in the Tomboy girl band.
graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1987 (specializing in piano), Allyson sang regularly at a Kansas City nightclub run by one of his uncles, who eventually became his workplace.
After signing with Concord Jazz in 1992, Allyson made her debut with I Did not Know About You , which was a great success. After that, it was to the accompaniment of a group of musicians from Kansas who became his usual: pianist Paul Smith, guitarists Danny Embrey and Rod Fleeman, bassist Bob Bowman and drummer Todd Strait.
His 1999 album, From Paris to Rio , contains songs in French and Portuguese, and covers a wide range stylistically from Jacques Brel to the samba and bossa nova. In 2001 he has probably been the biggest hit of his career in publishing, earning two Grammy nominations, Ballads: Remembering John Coltrane. Footprints In 2006 with , would also nominated for a Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album.
In this particular disc, Karrin is dedicated to reviewing and versioning songs that were monumental landmarks in the 70's. Thus, there are superb covers , ligeramente jazzeados, con una onda algo lounge , de Carly Simon, Cat Stevens, Joni Mitchell, Roberta Flack, Carole King, Elton John... Sin duda Karrin no es la mejor vocalista de nuestra era, y lo que ella aporta indudablemente es un oficio de aquellos, muchísima calidez, estilo y, sobre todo, un modo de frasear y de decir que pronto serán características suyas que la harán inconfundible entre muchas.
Todo un párrafo aparte requeriría el espectacular trabajo de arreglos y producción de Gil Goldstein, cerebro fundamental de este disco sumamente interesante.
